Fundamentals of Scattering Theory and Resonances in Quantum Mechanics

چکیده
We present the basics of two-body quantum-mechanical scattering theory and the theory of quantum resonances. The wave operators and S-matrix are constructed for smooth, compactly-supported potential perturbations of the Laplacian. The meromorphic continuation of the cut-off resolvent is proved for the same family of Schrödinger operators. Quantum resonances are defined as the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the cut-off resolvent. These are shown to be the same as the poles of the meromorphically continued S-matrix. The basic problems of the existence of resonances and estimates on the resonance counting function are described.

Scattering Resonances of Microstructures and Homogenization Theory
Scattering resonances are the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenmodes which solve the Schrödinger equation Hψ = Eψ for a Hamiltonian, H, subject to the condition of outgoing radiation at infinity. We consider the scattering resonance problem for potentials which are rapidly varying in space and are not necessarily small in a pointwise sense. Such potentials are of interest in many applications...
متن کاملZero-energy resonances and the flux -across-surfaces theorem
The flux-across-surfaces conjecture represents a corner stone in quantum scattering theory because it is the key-assumption needed to prove the usual relation between differential cross section and scattering amplitude. We improve a recent result [TDMB] by proving the conjecture also in presence of zero-energy resonances or eigenvalues, both in point and potential scattering.
متن کاملScattering Poles for Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds
For a class of manifolds X that includes quotients of real hyperbolic (n + 1)-dimensional space by a convex co-compact discrete group, we show that the resonances of the meromorphically continued resolvent kernel for the Laplacian on X coincide, with multiplicities, with the poles of the meromorphically continued scattering operator for X. In order to carry out the proof, we use Shmuel Agmon’s ...
متن کاملComplex Energies and Beginnings of Time Suggest a Theory of Scattering and Decay
Many useful concepts for a quantum theory of scattering and decay (like Lippmann-Schwinger kets, purely outgoing boundary conditions, exponentially decaying Gamow vectors, causality) are not well defined in the mathematical frame set by the conventional (Hilbert space) axioms of quantum mechanics. Using the Lippmann-Schwinger equations as the takeoff point and aiming for a theory that unites re...
متن کاملPerturbation Theory and Atomic Resonances Since Schrödinger’s Time
Abstract. Quantum theory makes a sharp distinction between bound states and scattering states, the former associated with point spectrum and the latter with continuous spectrum. Resonances associated with quasi-stationary states bridge this distinction, and have posed mathematical challenges since the beginning of the Schrödinger theory. Here the development of mathematical aspects of resonance...
